‘Quiet intelligence’, the tagline popped out at me, once we started to converse. Ashfaq came to GLH from Palaandeniya, Agalawatta last December, away from his Mother and little Sister.

Speaking with me alternatively in Sinhalese and Tamil, he said he enjoyed the study of science at school the most, and didn’t care much for citizenship studies.

Ashfaq is happy with the way things are at the home. Claiming that he came here to study, he asserts that he is taken care of like an own child. His buddy is Hassan, with whom he plays badminton. He also reads a lot in his spare time.

My initial instinct was proven true, at the last question of the interview. “What is your ambition?” I asked him , and without missing a beat he said “To become a writer”. I was not expecting that and must have appeared somewhat incredulous, for the GLH ‘Mother’ excused herself to go into her office, and brought me a copy of a published children’s story book, written by Ashfaq.
