Nizam started off slow with me. Eventually I learnt he had an affinity for the track & field , and that he enjoyed reciting the Qur’an. Originally from Panadura, he says his Mother, Aunt and 2 younger brothers still live at home. There was something poignant about him that I couldn’t quite identify, but which he wore around him.
He spoke some very basic English with me, but did say English was among his favorite subjects to learn at school, along with Tamil and Mathematics. His sporting interests revolved around athletics and he mentioned sprinting, relay and the high jump specifically. With Hussain, Ismatullah and Husni making up his close friend list at the home, he mentioned Abdul Rahman as his school-friend.
Nizam says he likes to study, but dislikes the tough subjects. Enjoying his life at the home, he emphasizes that he gets fed here much better than at home , and that the living facilities are far superior.
Nizam would like to do something with computers in the future, but his overarching ambition is to grow up and take care of his family.
